DELE A2 for Spanish Citizenship: How to Prepare and Pass

If you live in Spain and are preparing your application, you probably already know that to get Spanish citizenship by residence you need to pass two exams from the Instituto Cervantes: the DELE A2 and the CCSE. As an official DELE examiner, in this article I explain how to prepare for the DELE A2 for Spanish citizenship: who has to take it, what the exam looks like and what to do to pass it the first time.

Who has to take the DELE A2 for Spanish citizenship?

For citizenship by residence, you have to prove a basic knowledge of Spanish with the DELE A2 or a higher level. According to the Instituto Cervantes:

  • People who are nationals of a country or territory where Spanish is an official language are exempt from the DELE (but they still have to take the CCSE).
  • Minors and people under legal guardianship are exempt from both exams (DELE and CCSE).
  • If you already have a DELE A2 or higher (B1, B2…), it counts: you don’t need to take it again.

There are special cases, such as people with disabilities or literacy difficulties, who may follow a different procedure. If you are not sure about your situation, check with the Instituto Cervantes or an immigration lawyer.

DELE A2 and CCSE: what each one assesses

  • DELE A2: assesses your Spanish (reading, listening, writing and speaking). The DELE diploma does not expire.
  • CCSE (Constitutional and Sociocultural Knowledge of Spain): 25 questions about the Constitution, how the State is organised and Spanish culture and society. It lasts 45 minutes, you pass with 15 correct answers and the certificate is valid for 4 years for your citizenship application.

You can take them in different exam sessions, so you can prepare for one first and then the other.

What the DELE A2 exam looks like

The DELE A2 has four tests:

Test Duration
Reading comprehension 60 minutes
Listening comprehension 40 minutes
Written expression and interaction 45 minutes
Oral expression and interaction About 12 minutes + 12 minutes of preparation

How you pass

The tests are grouped into two groups of 50 points each: group 1 (reading and writing) and group 2 (listening and speaking). You need at least 30 points in each group to get an “Apto” (pass). The groups don’t compensate for each other, so you can’t neglect any skill.

What level of Spanish you need for A2

A2 is a basic level, but you need to communicate in everyday situations. You should be able to:

  • talk about yourself, your family, your job and your routine;
  • say what you did (past) and talk about your plans (future);
  • understand ads, messages, notices and short everyday texts;
  • write a simple email or message to a friend or a company;
  • ask for and give information in a shop, at the doctor’s or in an office.

If you have lived in Spain for years and use Spanish every day, you probably already have much of this level. What is often missing is knowing the exam format and strengthening your writing.

How to prepare for the DELE A2 for citizenship: a 6-step plan

  1. Do a complete sample exam at the start (the Instituto Cervantes publishes free sample exams). This shows you which test is hardest for you.
  2. Review basic grammar: present tense, past tenses (pretérito perfecto and indefinido), future with ir a, ser and estar and prepositions.
  3. Learn everyday vocabulary: personal information, housing, health, shopping, work, transport and free time.
  4. Practise writing every week: emails and short texts about your life. Ask someone to correct them.
  5. Practise the speaking test out loud: introduce yourself, describe a photo and role-play everyday conversations.
  6. Do timed mock exams in the last few weeks, and in the final week review without studying anything new (here is what to do the week before your DELE exam).

Common mistakes in the DELE A2

  • Being overconfident because you have lived in Spain for years: speaking day to day is not the same as doing an exam with time limits and specific tasks.
  • Not practising writing: it is the test where a lack of preparation shows most.
  • Leaving questions blank in reading and listening: wrong answers don’t lose points.
  • Memorising texts for the speaking test: the examiner will ask you questions and you need to be able to react.
  • Registering late: places fill up and results take a few weeks. Plan your application timeline in advance.

How long does it take to prepare for the DELE A2?

It depends on your starting point. If you already communicate comfortably in Spanish, 1–2 months of exam-focused preparation is usually enough. If you are starting from a lower level, allow several months of classes.
